Looking to add something new to your weekend family activities? Want to get up close and personal with nature without a long journey? A relaxing and unique plant exploration journey awaits you in Tung Chung, where you can discover rare and seldom-seen plants of Lantau Island indoors! From now until 1 February 2026, the Tung Chung Community Liaison Centre is hosting a photo exhibition, Discovering Plants of Lantau', showcasing over 20 lesser-known plant species of Lantau Island. Highlights of this free exhibition include the pink Poritis, a Hong Kong unique species that once disappeared; the Lingnan Maple, which displays vibrant red leaves in autumn and winter; and the endangered Gironniera, listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The venue also features plant specimens provided by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, allowing adults and children to observe the unique plant world of Lantau Island up close without having to go hiking or trekking.
The exhibition features precious photos of over twenty local plant species, including the Lingnan Maple, a species unique to China; the floating fern species Azolla, whose leaves are arranged in a 'field' pattern; the pink Poritis, a Hong Kong unique species that is difficult to discover; the Gironniera, a rare species in China and listed as vulnerable; and the unique butterfly-flower viburnum, whose inflorescence is arranged in a unique pattern. The public can appreciate the forms and colours of these rare plants from different perspectives. The venue also displays plant specimens provided by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, allowing the public to observe the textures and structures of plants up close. The venue also features immersive interactive games where participants can design the appearances of different plants and animals, with their patterns projected onto a large screen. It's perfect for children to have fun and be creative, and they can also receive free exquisite souvenirs.
This exhibition is located in the new wing of the Tung Chung Community Liaison Centre and is completely free of charge. The public can enjoy the different seasonal faces of Lantau Island's plants without having to hike or climb mountains, making it a relaxing journey of plant exploration on Lantau Island. Come and learn more about the growth environments, morphological characteristics, and ecological roles of different plants, and understand the ecological value and conservation significance of Lantau Island.
